What's Wrong with this Picture?

Not wanting to distract too much from the White Spot discussion, I put this page together to indicate what's wrong with the information in this advertisement. Let's Take a Look:

I have adult specimens of Acrochordus javanicus, about 4' in length. Perfect specimens with no scrapes, scar, and most importently NO SKIN BLISTERS! As many poeple know WC adult Acrochordus javanicus are very rarely offered for sale, primarily because of the high mortality rates due to improper packaging during transport whcih causes skin blisters (Pseudomonas bacteria which cause septicemia, aka "Blood Poisioning").

You won't have to worry about that here. These adults came in perfectly and there were transported correctly. I am only able to offer unsexed specimens. This species is usually female heavy. There are many reports of this species being able to be parthogenetic, with LTC females "cloning" themselves. A great display snake, they feed on fish. As with all Acrochordids, I reccomend great filtration and the regular addition of a product called "koi zyme."

I am asking $250.00 per a specimen, quanities are limitied. Once these are gone I will be a few more years until such nice large animals come in."

"Perfect specimens with no scrapes, scar, and most importently NO SKIN BLISTERS!"--Sounds like a Great Accomplishment, but its not. Acrochordus javanicus often arrive in country in that condition these days....Where have You been?

"As many poeple know WC adult Acrochordus javanicus are very rarely offered for sale,"--Really? Mark Lucas and Strictly Reptiles have offered them at least a couple of times in the last Year or less (4/2007). Additionally, many of them are not around long enough to hit places like Kingsnake.com Classifieds. They are snapped up, apparently, before You even knew they were here. Update: 6/07 2-4' Adult javanicus offered by another seller on Kingsnake.com.

"primarily because of the high mortality rates"--Really? Sorry, but its primarily because they are not offered to You, because You are not in touch with the folks importing them. Many WC Adults are imported every year. Where have You been? Also, many of the animals in their native countries are Eaten by the locals and the larger skins go to the skin trade. Large Pregnant females are especially relished. That information is readily available to You.

"due to improper packaging during transport whcih causes skin blisters (Pseudomonas bacteria which cause septicemia, aka "Blood Poisioning")." --The Stress of improper holding, packaging/shipping is what causes the "Skin Blisters". And its caused by many other things as well which all come down to Stress. Thinking that the animals arrived in this country "Skin Blister" free means they will stay that way is just plain naive. Additionally, the bacterial infections are secondary and are not directly caused by the improper packaging/shipping, unless the animals are rubbed raw and have one or more open wounds from said packaging/shipping. Then that wound still has to become infected. Moreover, White Spot shows up long before the "Skin Blisters". Additionally, the female pictured in this ad has at least 15 damaged scales that I can count in the picture--that's initial White Spot. Don't get me Wrong: Its a Beautiful animal and in Great shape for being recently imported--but its still stressed and those lighter/white scales Show it's Stress.

"You won't have to worry about that here."--That's Non-sense and has already been covered. Once You gain some actual experience with these animals--I'll bet that tune changes.

"These adults came in perfectly and there were transported correctly."--I hope so, because most of them do these days, unless they are brought in by a Fish Supplier. I think You are confusing A. javanicus with A. granulatus.

"I am only able to offer unsexed specimens."--Really? Why? Acrochordus snakes are sexually dimorphic which makes them one of the easiest snakes to sex. The snake pictured in this ad is a female--Yes, they are that easy. I thought You were an "Aquatic Snake Guru"....?

"There are many reports of this species being able to be parthogenetic, with LTC females "cloning" themselves."--Really? Got any References? I've done plenty of research on these snakes and I haven't found any validity to Your Claim. Additionally, sperm storage would be a much more acceptable claim than parthogentisism(<--Is that even a word?) Many Reports, huh? They must be hidden in Your vault.

"A great display snake, they feed on fish."--Great display snake, huh? Well, I guess You got that one right, huh? Let's see....the only time you are going to see the snake is when it comes up for air--unless its unhappy with its environment. Otherwise, its going to hide in its shelter and only come out in the blackest of darkness. Once acclimated--even a night-light will keep it from coming out until its just plain hungry enough. A snake that You can't hold and don't see--Yep! Makes a Great Display animal. Sheesh! People that actually Do and Have kept these snakes will tell You the exact opposite of Your claim. Have You ever even kept one of these snakes?

"As with all Acrochordids, I reccomend great filtration and the regular addition of a product called "koi zyme." --What's the purpose of the "Koizyme"? Yeah, I know what it is. I've researched it, used it and even have some left over--so, what's the purpose of it for keeping Acrochordus snakes?

"I am asking $250.00 per a specimen, quanities are limitied."--At $250 You must have bought some of the ones Mark just had available, What? Last week.... $100-150 is a fair price. $250 is Retail upon Retail.

"Once these are gone I will be a few more years until such nice large animals come in."--Yeah, maybe for You. I would guess that You have the availability of A. javanicus confused with the availability of A. arafurae.

Get a Clue, man. You are doing much more Harm than Good. Open Your Mind. You don't have all of the answers--and apparently most of the ones You do have: Are just Plain Wrong.

Look Folks: Just Do Your Own Research--and be Very Leery of the "Claims" out there. Talk is Cheap. Zoos have struggled--unsuccessfully--for yrs now--even with all of their resources. A few have had long-term success--but most have Failed. Many, many Private parties have Failed repeatedly. These snakes are slowly being sorted out by a few Zoos and random Privates Parties--but there is still a Ton of Misinformation being passed around.

Just Do Your Own Research
